Thesis (S.B.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 2013.This electronic version was submitted by the student author. The certified thesis is available in the Institute Archives and Special Collections.Cataloged from student-submitted PDF version of thesis.Includes bibliographical references (pag 23).It is experimentally known that the flight lengths of random searches by foragers such as honey bees statistically belong to a power law distribution. Optimality of such random searches has been a topic of extensive research because knowing their optimal parameters may help applied sciences. Viswanathan et al. have shown the inverse-square power law to be the optimal law for such random searches. This thesis explores the capability of the model presented in such that it can be applied to Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (UAVs). The thesis also identifies the minimum flight length, lmin, as an important factor that needs to be controlled based on the UAV's sensor range. We present a theoretical lmin as an explicit function of the sensor range, rv, and an estimated target density, p.by Mukul Kumar Singh.S.B

Objective: The present study was aimed to develop metronidazole (MNZ) loaded poly lactic-co-glycolic acid (PLGA) based mucoadhesive nanoparticles (NPs) in prolonged treatment in periodontitis. Methods: Nanoparticles were prepared by using single (SE) and double (DE) emulsion method to determine the suitability of methods. Prepared NPs were evaluated for surface morpholgy, mean particle size, polydispersity index, zeta potential, mucoadhesion ability and invitro-drug release, Results: SEM images confirmed that NPs were of spherical shape and smooth surface. Mean particle size, of MNZ loaded NPs were found 583.28±18.22 and 872.72±63.18 prepared by SE and DE method. Similarly, polidispersity index (0.68±0.1 and 0.83±0.06) and zeta potention (-33.29±0.7 and-31.28.0.6) was found in acceptable range. Prepared NPs were surface treated with Sodium alginate (SA) to increase mucoadhesive property. It was observe that particles remain adhere till 24 hr with biological membrane. Prepared NPs allow release of MNZ upto 24 h in sustained manner. Conclusion: This study confirms that the prepared MNZ loaded NPs may be used as an better alternate with addition application such as prolonged action thus improved patient compliance

Gouty tophi of small joints of hand: A classical presentation

Gout is an acute inflammatory disorder caused by deposition of monosodium urate crystals. Gouty tophus can be the initial presenting feature of chronic disease. Diagnosis of periarticular nodules can be a challenge for clinicians. Fine needle aspiration can provide quick, cost-effective and definitive diagnosis for the early management of these patients. Here, we present the case of gouty tophi of the right-hand index finger in a 45-years-old male leading to restricted finger movements

Retrospective analysis of adverse drug reactions reported at ADR monitoring centre under PvPI in a tertiary care hospital

    Get PDF
Background: Adverse drug reactions (ADRs) are a major cause of morbidity and mortality in hospitals and pose great economic burden on the health care system. This study was conducted with the aim of creating awareness and developing a culture for proper communication and reporting of ADRs among health care professionals. Methods: This study is a retrospective analysis of total 60 reported ADRs from AMC at a tertiary care hospital during a period of 14 months from March 2015 to April 2016. These ADRs were analysed for the pattern and type of reactions, body systems involved, causative drugs, and severity of reaction, their outcome, management and causality assessment. Results: Patients in the age groups of 41-50 years were most commonly involved with slight male preponderance. Skin reactions like rashes and itching were the most commonly observed ADR. The most common causative drugs for ADR were antimicrobial agents; IV route was the most common route responsible. Majority of ADRs belonged to type B, were non serious and moderate in severity. Most of the patients recovered. On causality assessment scale, most of the ADRs were found to be probable with the causative drugs. Conclusions: Most of the ADRs were treatable by early and appropriate management. The major limitation was under-reporting of ADRs which can be overcome by creating awareness and enhancing the culture of ADR monitoring and reporting among health care professionals for safe use of drugs

Intrapartum fetal monitoring by cardiotocography and its correlation with labour outcome

Background: The intrapartum fetal surveillance has gained significant importance. Avoidance of adverse fetal outcome is the objective of intrapartum fetal monitoring. This study helps in forming the aims to provide simple and clear approach to intrapartum fetal surveillance in high risk population. Methods: In present study 80 laboring patients were analyzed retrospectively who were admitted in GCS Hospital from December 2017 to May 2018. Continuous fetal monitoring was done and results were correlated with maternal and fetal outcome. Results: Cases with high risk (23) had more non-reassuring pattern of 8.7% as compared to low risk which had 5%. With non-reassuring pattern, C-section was done in 38% whereas in reassuring pattern 85% had vaginal delivery. NICU admission in non-reassuring pattern were 7 (63.6%) whereas in reassuring were only 2 (2.89%). This makes false positivity as 36.4%.Conclusions: Predictive value of CTG of reassuring pattern is quite high. In spite of false positives, it is a very effective tool in labor room

Coexistence of solid tumors with congenital abnormality is known to occur. Neuroblastoma is the most common solid tumor in childhood which has various associations, but seldom with spina bifida. The authors describe one such case which highlights and enlightens the readers with this rare association

Photography and Its Relevance in Pathology

    Get PDF
Pathology is a visual science which holds true of the old adage “seeing is believing.” Photography has become an integral part of this branch of medicine. Its application lies not only in diagnosis and consultation including telepathology, medicolegal documentation and quality assurance but also in learning and scientific purposes. The lower cost and shorter image production time has paved the way for digital imaging. Large archives of such images can be created and stored with an ease of access. Photography techniques in pathology are purely based on observation or experience rather than theory. This article aims to describe the practical aspects of photographic techniques in pathology

Role of low dose danazol therapy for endometriosis related infertility and its comparison with laparoscopic fulguration in low resources

Background: The objective was to study the role of laparoscopic fulguration and danazol therapy for endometriosis in case of infertility followed by comparison of both therapies. Methods: The present cross–sectional study was conducted in the department of obstetrics and gynecology SN Medical College Agra. Over the period from December 2010 to November 2013. Symptomatic women (n=50) of age group 20-39 yrs coming to gynecology OPD were selected for study group. The study group was subjected to detailed history, physical examination laboratory test, ultrasound examination, and laparoscopy. Then 50 patients were allotted for laparoscopic fulguration and 50 for danazol treatment. Results: Out of 100 on transvaginal sonography, 10%of patient have cyst 2cm size, rest 70% have normal scan. On laparoscopy 52% of patient have red lesion, 16% have bluish black lesion, 20% have yellow brown lesion rest 22% have normal findings. On danazol therapy pelvic pain and dysmenorrhoea was relieved in 64% and 52% conceived .on laparoscopic fulguration symptom were relieved in 69% and 60% conceived. Conclusions: Based on this study it can be concluded that choice of therapy depend on age of patient,  duration of infertility, physical findings, goal of surgery, experience of surgeon and most important the  availability of resources. In this study result was comparable
